On being a tourist at home – Part 2 – Ohakune

As it enter into my first Full German winter – I am reflecting on my last full winter.

You know me. I don’t like being cold. At all. I have successfully avoided being cold for seven years at this point. So, when I realised I was going to be in NZ for a winter, it was decided that a trip to the snow was compulsory. Click here to read about how I survived my first winter in seven years.  Very soon there will be a German update, I promise.

So off we headed to Ohakune – located roughly in the middle of the North Island, Ohakune is famous for three things: snow, The Powder Keg and carrots. Yip. Carrots.

Yes. A big carrot.

We had left our trip til quite late in the season really, but we did see snow. Mostly from a safe and comfortable distance.

As there wasn’t much snow at life level, we decided to do a tramp in the mountains for a couple of hours. It was actually lovely and well worth it. But you can tell by our clothing, it was far from tropical.

After de-sweating, we drove up to the snow, have a brief frolic and then descend to a restaurant with mulled wine and hot food.

A great weekend get away from the city and (should I ever live through winter again) I would like a repeat, maybe longer experience. Maybe I will even snowboard. Although, my friends from Andorra will probably beg me not to.
